Emancipation Day

The Welcome Collaborative joins with Nova Scotians to commemorate Emancipation Day on August 1st

Emancipation Day marks the abolition of slavery by the British Parliament in 1834, which marked the end of African peoples’ enslavement around the world.

Each August 1, Canadians are invited to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.

Emancipation Day celebrates the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada.
