February marks African Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of African Nova Scotians and communities of African descent.
This year’s theme is “Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power, and Progress.” The theme speaks to the power that comes when African Nova Scotians and people of African descent stand together with a shared sense of direction. It recognizes unity as an active force for change that strengthens communities, advances justice, and creates new opportunities.
African Nova Scotians have been part of Nova Scotia for over 400 years, with 52 historic communities shaping the province’s identity. This month honours that legacy and the wisdom of elders who continue to guide future generations.
The Welcome Collaborative acknowledges the contributions of African Nova Scotians—past and present—and recognizes the need to address anti-Black racism within healthcare. We commend physicians and healthcare leaders working toward equity and inclusion.
