Wellness Supports for Physicians

The Welcome Collaborative orientation program helps new physicians integrate into the Nova Scotia health-care system. The program’s partnership with Doctors Nova Scotia (DNS) plays a key role in that effort.

The five-day orientation program includes the session Resources and Supports for Physicians. This session introduces the staff at DNS who provide the support programs and services available for physicians.

“We let physicians know that we’re here for them, that’s our only mandate,” says Jennifer Girard, Physician Advisor, who presents alongside Katelyn Junus, Professional Support Program Lead at DNS. The session helps physicians begin to understand the “who’s who” within the system and where to turn to access supports available to assist them with their entry into practice in the province.

Girard explains that DNS is often associated with contracts and negotiations, but the session highlights a broader picture. “There are other pieces to it,” says Girard, including advocacy, practice support, and opportunities to connect. The goal, she adds, is to ensure physicians know these supports exist — even if they don’t need them right away.

Wellness is a central component of the session. Junus, a clinical social worker and the first point of contact for physician wellness services, emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma. “A lot of physicians don’t come forward for support because of the stigma,” she says. “Just offering a space where there’s confidentiality, psychological safety, active listening, and trust makes a big difference.”

The in-person format of the Welcome Collaborative strengthens that message. “They put a face to a name,” Junus explains, noting that meeting presenters in person helps physicians feel more comfortable reaching out later. Girard agrees, identifying the face‑to‑face connection offered by the Welcome Collaborative as “invaluable.”

Both presenters emphasize that support through DNS is confidential and physician‑directed.

Within the Welcome Collaborative, the session reinforces a shared commitment: ensuring physicians feel welcomed, supported, and connected as they begin their journey in Nova Scotia.
