Welcome Collaborative launches Sensitive Exam Workshop with Dalhousie University

The January offering of the Welcome Collaborative launched a new Sensitive Exam Workshop in collaboration with the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. The workshop aims to equip physicians with the clinical expertise needed for sensitive exams. The workshop also provides guidance in performing exams that require both technical proficiency and a compassionate approach. It acts as a valuable opportunity to build clinical competence and foster trust with patients.

The Sensitive Exam Workshop was a response to participant feedback. Participating physicians shared that the way sensitive exams are performed in Canada can differ from practises in their home countries, and expressed that an orientation to those expectations would be helpful.

Participants will learn to conduct thorough, sensitive examinations. The curriculum emphasizes patient education, clear communication, and the use of inclusive, neutral language.

Physicians are taught to explain each step of the process, address patient anxiety, and ensure privacy and dignity throughout the examination. The workshop also stresses the importance of patient comfort and safety.

Sessions are structured to provide small-group practise on models, followed by opportunities to perform sensitive exams with teaching associates. This learning environment encourages questions and feedback, allowing participants to refine their technique and bedside manner.

Resources, including handouts and demonstration videos, are available for review on the Welcome Collaborative Learning Portal.

The workshop reflects the Welcome Collaborative’s commitment to advancing education and supporting physicians in delivering sensitive, patient-centred care.
